Gareth Delve Ultimate XV: McCaw, Dallaglio, Shane & King Carlos

Former Wales international and Gloucester Rugby captain Gareth Delve joins Mark on The Rugbee Buzz – Ultimate XV to select the greatest team made up of players he played with and against during a career that took him from Wales and the Premiership to Super Rugby and Japan.

And what a side it is.

Gareth explains why Lawrence Dallaglio was the outstanding captain he played against, what made Richie McCaw so difficult to deal with, the brilliance of Shane Williams, and why Carlos Spencer was even better up close than he had imagined growing up watching “King Carlos”.

There are some fascinating left-field selections too, including a hugely talented Samoan centre, a giant Fijian winger and an Australian full-back who could seemingly kick the ball forever.

Gareth also reflects on leadership, standards, his time captaining the Melbourne Rebels, the players who influenced his own career and his work developing the next generation at Gloucester Rugby.

Plus, there’s a particularly poignant Wildcard selection and one of rugby’s funniest men gets the call as Gareth’s Morale Reserve.
